Khipu
2016-2017
Sound design and installation
This work of art focuses on the rescue and documentation of Ecuadorian Andean music used during Holy Week by the communities of San Pedro, province of Imbabura-Ecuador, which is in danger of disappearing, since only a few indigenous people maintain the tradition. For this reason, the artist proposes writing pieces, but not using the notation of Western music, but the quipu, a pre-Hispanic mathematical system based on knotted strings.
Although there is no evidence that the quipu was ever used in a musical recording, the artist chose this technique as a way of portraying a musical tradition that uses codes different from those of the West. The project, then, develops an alternative form of musical writing, creating new possibilities for sound language, as well as for understanding art.
